Big 2 is a digital adaptation of the popular card game Big 2 or Big Two, known by various names such as Choh Dai Di, Da Lao Er, Chinese Poker, and Cap Sa. It is widely enjoyed in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan. This game requires four players to participate. The primary objective is to be the first player to discard all of their cards. The player who accomplishes this wins the game.

Big Two Rules (Hong Kong and Taiwan)

The ranking of the cards from highest to lowest are as follows: 2 > A > K > Q > J > 10 > 9 > 8 > 7 > 6 > 5 > 4 > 3

In terms of suit ranking, in Hong Kong the order is ♠>♥>♣>♦ whereas in Taiwan it is ♠>♥>♦>♣

At the beginning of each game, thirteen cards are dealt to each player in a counter-clockwise direction. The player with the 3♦ (in the Hong Kong variant) or 3♣ (in the Taiwan variant) starts by playing it either alone or in combination with other cards, initiating the first trick. The game progresses in a counter-clockwise manner, following standard climbing-game rules: each player must play a higher-ranked card or combination than the previous one, with an equal number of cards. Players are also allowed to pass, indicating that they do not wish to play. Passing does not affect the continuation of the game. Once all but one player has passed consecutively, the current trick concludes, and the last player to play starts a new trick.

The game concludes when one of the players successfully discards all of their cards.

Hong Kong Variant:

A five-card combination can be beaten by a stronger group of cards. For example, a flush beats any straight, a full house beats any straight or flush, four of a kind with an odd card beats any straight, flush or full house, and a straight flush beats all other types of five-card combinations.

Taiwan Variant:

In this variant, players are not allowed to play a different type of five-card combination over the current one. For instance, a full house cannot be played over a straight. Additionally, an honor hand (four of a kind plus a card or a straight flush) can be played not only to beat a lower-ranking five-card hand but also to beat singles, pairs, or triples.

Cards can be played individually or in groups of two, three, or five cards, similar to poker hands. The opening card of each trick determines the number of cards to be played. All cards within a trick must consist of the same number of cards. The valid combinations and their rankings are as follows:

  • Single cards: Any card from the deck, ranked by their value with suit as the tiebreaker
  • Pairs: Any two cards with matching ranks, ranked as with singular cards but with the higher suit card given priority
  • Three of a kind: Any three cards with matching ranks, ranked by value (twos rank high)
  • Five-card hand: There are five different valid five-card hands, ranked from lowest to highest as follows:
    • Straight: Any five cards in sequence (not necessarily of the same suit). The ranking of the straights is as listed below:
      Hong Kong Variant: 3-4-5-6-7 < ... < 10-J-Q-K-A < 2-3-4-5-6 (Suit of 2 is tiebreaker)
      Taiwan Variant: A-2-3-4-5 < ... < 10-J-Q-K-A < 2-3-4-5-6 (Suit of 2 is tiebreaker)
    • Flush: Any five cards of the same suit (not in sequence). The rank is determined by the highest suit, followed by the highest value card. In another variant, a flush is ranked based on the highest card in the combination, with suit only coming into play if the highest cards are equal.
    • Full House: A combination of three of a kind and a pair. The rank is determined by the value of the triple.
    • Four of a kind: A set of four cards with the same rank, plus any fifth card. Rank is determined by the value of the four-card set.
    • Straight Flush: A combination of a straight and a flush, consisting of five cards in sequence and from the same suit. It is ranked similarly to straights, with suit serving as a tiebreaker.
